DF’s comparison is totally apt. Peiper was an excellent general and a committed ideologue to Nazism. They were both brilliant in a similar way, able to raid and exploit nearly unstoppably.

Peiper was only stopped by the US Army. The Red Army’s severe flexibility problem kept them from being able to effectively pursue him. American forces were far more willing to show initiative (which would have gotten a Soviet officer sent to the gulag) and were thus able to set up roadblocks and ambushes to slow him down.
