Just a heads up. I know I was talking loosely earlier. But if the US embassy in Baghdad falls get ready for the shit to hit the fan in DC that’s going to make the Benghazi stuff look like a cakewalk. End alert.

The NYT article I linked to has me thinking. Iranians are saying (at least publically) that they feel confident the Iraqis are going to regroup and retake their territory easily with a little help. Iran can’t afford another failed state on its borders and I don;t think they’re going to let it happen. I think it’s also very important for Iran to have some serious favors owed by Iraq. With the nuclear negotiations coming to a head soon Iran can be well positioned to weather any sanctions and can drive a much better deal at the bargaining table.Obama might actually let Iraq fail but I don’t think Iran will.
