they weren’t so much badass as it was that there were millions of them. their war losses were shocking. I assume their population has never actually recovered from it. then sending millions of to gulags probably didn’t help.

A common misperception. Yes, there were millions of them. But there were millions of Germans as well. The Soviets had better tanks, better intelligence and better tactics than the Germans, and beat them fair and square.
