It was in his checked luggage and he told the agent as much at the counter. Granted, a 290 lb lineman is a fragile leaf that needs protection, but he actually had the clip out of the gun (to prevent accidental discharge if the case was dropped)…not stupid…actually smart. If you ask me, it was pretty responsible gun safety…though one should remember to empty the clip into a shoe or something so NY law won’t get you for having the gun ‘loaded’ even if the clip isn’t in.

According to the report his problem was that the clip was loaded which in NY is against the law.

Though the clip was not in the gun, the weapon is considered loaded under New York law because it was filled with bullets.
