However, as is common, the law of unintended consequences sticks its big nose in here. As a result of this disaster there is now a moratorium on off-shore drilling for 6 months. Longer period, increased (and rightfully so) regulations will impact oil drilling. Also, with a loss of capital (and capitalization) BP will be less able to afford other exploratory ventures.

In the end, everyone gets to pay for this mess.

Indeed. but BP is not the only player and just because we stop drilling does not mean other countries will, in fact they will be happy to step up production to make up for our moratorium.
