Due to the high number of uninsured drivers on the road, many states require drivers to carry at least uninsured motorist coverage, if not both uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Insurance companies and government studies estimate that 1 in 8 drivers is going around in an uninsured vehicle, and many more are driving underinsured.
