The peninsula lived from tourists, both Russian and Ukrainian. Now the Russians can’t get there by train, the plane tickets are pretty expensive, and the Ukrainians can’t visit for obvious reasons. The beaches are empty, the whole season has gone to the dogs. Hail Putin!

I believe the plan now is to open a bunch of casinos in Crimea to drum up tourist business. The Crimeans have always considered it a family-friendly place, and aren’t too thrilled about this. Seems the Russian response to that is “you’re free now, so sit down and shut up.”

Plus there’s that little matter of months of TV footage of masked men in combat uniform waving automatic rifles around and shit blowing up. Doesn’t exactly scream “fun in the Black Sea sun.”
