Yeah, right now I’m alienated from most of my friendly neighbors because I don’t want to be around for political discussions; a lot of it is the frustration that their empathy runs out so fast.

But on the other hand, they just refuse to notice how conservative policy doesn’t do what it claims to; it’s always Others and outsiders that cause problems and make things not work. Because I’ve been an outsider and subject to abuse of power repeatedly in my life, I find it way too easy to imagine the conditions under which I’d be deemed an “other” by my community. And on the other hand, I’ve lived in the same place for thirty years and have noticed how people choose not to see the ugly things that people do inside their communities.
