Conservative ideology talks a lot about the moral value of labor, but their legislation conspires to treat it just like any other commodity: a business expense to be minimized or eliminated altogether.

Part of the American Dream is to allow people to give their children a better start in life, which means leaving them time and resources to invest in their children’s upbringing and education.

A lot of it goes back to the wingnut creation myth of America as a nation of hard-working “independent” white men who built a country, fought for their independence, tamed the wilderness, and then built it into an international juggernaut without a bit of help from anybody. That any time the federal government tried to intrude on that “independence” has only led to ruin and hardship. And that the moment the nation began to fall apart was when people “started getting paid not to work.”
