Engineer in Lac-Mgantic train disaster suspended

The engineer in charge of the train that derailed and exploded in Lac-Mgantic is “under police control,” according to the head of the rail company.

That’s not surprising. Idle trains are supposed to have enough of their manual brakes set to hold the train in place and there should be a test to verify this before the train is left. The air brakes are not intended to do the job for any extended time since the air pressure will eventually drop.

And blaming it on outside agency or the one engine being turned off and stopping replacement of the air pressure due to a small fire is simply attempted to dodge the issue. Someone skipped on some very obvious and well-established safety procedures and now 50-60 people are dead or missing as a result of it.
