There is a local paved trail called the W&OD that cuts through the Virginia ‘burbs down to the Potomac River.
(It was originally the roadbed for the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad line. The Line would bring produce and gentleman farmer commuters from the Virginia countryside to the District. The Highway System put that out of business after World War 2.)
As a walking and biking path it attracts quite an assortment of people. From type A bicyclists on expensive racing bikes to little old ladies walking their elderly dogs and standing on the far side of the path from the aforementioned leashed dog.
