The oldest pictorial record of a lute dates back to the Uruk period in Southern Mesopotamia - Iraq - Nasiriyah city nowadays, over 5000 years ago on a cylinder seal acquired by Dr. Dominique Collon and currently housed at the British Museum.

I’ll have to look for that the next time I’m in London. I usually stay right next to the museum and spend more time there than “working”.
