The best of them knew it was flawed, but it was a political compromise, and they depended on future generations to live up to the ideals, not fetishize the letter of it.

IMO the astonishing thing is how well it really worked out over time and all it’s changes. From paper to internet, from literal horse power to international flights. What else has held up so well? Every instance is all the more notable.
