The creepiest part about torture is definitely the torturers, for me.

He doesn’t refute a single one of the substantive criticisms.

I was really surprised, to read that entire article he wrote in the Washington Post, and (as you say) see absolutely nothing of interest or substance, no refutation of any of the obvious concerns about torture as an instrument of the US government.

All he really said was that the enemy can do unthinkable damage, e.g. Al Queda’s nuclear ambitions. I’m afraid I have to agree with him very strongly about that, but he utterly failed to connect that to any justification for torture.

This is a very difficult question, and the Washington Post article shed no light on it whatsoever.
