Try living in a Western PA steel town in the 50’s-70s with the fly ash sprinkling down on you from the coke ovens along with the rotten egg hydrogen sulfide funds when the ovens were opened. Add the various mills and mines dumping acids and sludge into the Ohio river. You walk on the bridge between Ambridge and the J&L plant in Aliquippa and see swarms of dead fish floating down the Ohio.

The the mills were shut down, the blame laid on the EPA and liberals…you had to leave…

my first husband (RIP) worked for Interlake Steel (later named Acme Steel) in Riverdale, Illinois from the late 60s to ~1991.
All of our vehicles were coated in graphite after sitting in the plant parking lot. I do not even want to think what his lungs looked like.
