I’ve read the court transcripts. The man admitted on the stand that he was making every effort to keep her from leaving the house, and screamed “I’m going to kill you!” even after seeing she’d grabbed her gun.

The judge still came to the conclusion that she “could” have escaped.

This is why, if she’s not granted a retrial, she is likely to get an appeal. The judge specifically decided contrary to the letter of the law.

Add to this that the judge indicated a reason for doubting her fear for her life (the basis for self-defense) is that she fired a warning shot into the ceiling instead of shooting at her assaulter.
