All of the wingers seem to think this was a pro-Obama ad. I must admit I did get a “morning in America” vibe and thought the words “Obama 2012” might appear at the end. I think the wingers are just guilty because they were against the auto bailout and have nothing to do with the industry’s resurgence.

Also, Romney actively trash talks the bailout today in a kind of deliberately obtuse denial. What he and the wingers refuse to recognize is the difference between Chapters 11 and 7. Romney’s rhetoric is that GM and Chrysler could have come back leaner if they were allowed to fail. The fact is that there were no investors other than the US government willing to step in, and therefore they were facing Chapter 7, total liquidation and all assets sold at auction. The companies would have been utterly destroyed, the equipment sold off piecemeal to the highest bidder, and the ripple effects on the economy from the parts manufacturers and dealerships falling like dominos would have sent us into another great depression.

The entire Republican argument is founded on a deliberate ignorance as to the actual situation that was faced.
