Of course current politics is an important theme in Avatar, but so what? Many science fiction movies/television series make political points. For example, Star Trek (Original series, TNG, DS9, etc.) also had many episodes that made a political point that resonated with its intended audience. Frankly, Avatar’s politics hits close to home for many people, and as long it sells tickets, that can’t be an altogether bad thing.

Star Trek’s entire premise was a political point. We accept Chekov, Sulu and Uhura now implicitly as the BRIDGE OF THE ENTERPRISE, but at the time, it was controversial stuff. A Russian? Whut? Michelle Nichols was actually contacted by Mlk Jr. about her role on the show, when she was considering leaving.
