Intelligence doesn’t fully compensate for lack of training. And Khan’s ability to think likely worked against him. When seconds count, military personnel are trained to react, not think, because there isn’t really time for thought. So he does not move quickly enough when something unexpected occurs, and that is a big part of his downfall. For all of his ability, Khan Noonian Singh never understood a basic fact long before drummed into the head of James T. Kirk: No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.

Precisely…after Khan’s first strike against the Enterprise, he’s so busy doing his big reveal and dictating terms of surrender, he’s not catching on that Kirk, Spock, and Saavik are busy making preparations to drop the Reliant’s shields. When his shields are dropped, he has no idea how to override it, therefore Kirk & Co. are able to get off a couple of shots, scoot, and regroup.

Khan deserved to blow himself up in the end.
