I believe Bernie saw the small field and thought of this as his big chance to win it all. Just found out the other day that Bernie managed to win his Senate seat in one of the most underhanded ways possible, namely running for the Dem nomination and then declaring after he’d won it that he didn’t want it and would be running as an independent. In other words, he decapitated the only possible competition and then left Democrats in Vermont with no choice but to support him or stay home. That’s the kind of man running this year, the kind that is not above dirty tricks to advance his “revolution.”

So he’s a “Tea Party” Democrat. Wants all the benefits of a major party without any of the responsibilities attached to belonging to one.
