Both main parties in the UK have moved closer to the centre in recent years - I actually think the same thing has happened in the USA, the difference being that the rhetoric of the ‘grassroots’ has become more extreme on both the Democrat and Republican side.

I think the voters are probably getting more centerist, but I think the two major parties are going in opposite directions right now. The Dems under Obama are taking us back to the New Deal faster than I care to see. And, the rudderless Republicans are being pulled further and further to Abyss on the right. I wish both parties started moving to the center.
