I read an excerpt from a historical research journal once, about the flight log of a WWII Lancaster bomber pilot. He was the experienced commander of a crew of eight men flying bombing missions over Germany. He “celebrated” his coming-of-age 21st birthday on one such mission, noting that he was the oldest man on board his aircraft that day.

He did not survive the war.
