I just got through binge watching Silicon Valley and wifi enabled appliances were a significant plot point. The series noted that it could be a big problem (cough*skynet*cough).

A couple of years ago I read “The Steel Kiss” by Jeffery Deaver in which a hacker gains control of appliances & vehicles to cause mayhem.
