One thing that happens so commonly is that young people and first time property owners under appreciate the costs - time and money - to properly maintain property and improvements.

And this is one thing my father continually impressed upon me by having me help with maintenance and improvement tasks as a youngster. I know what it costs to replace a roof, or to resurface my driveway, or to rebuild my deck - and can plan accordingly, to ensure that these projects are done on a reasonable schedule. I also prioritize maintaining my lawn within the constraints of my schedule, because I don’t want my lawn to be “that guy’s” that always looks unkempt and weedy.
