If you listen to the Paulians, the problem lies in the fact that we have a federal government to begin with. Given a choice, they’d chuck the Constitution and return to the Articles of Confederation, where the federal government is a vestigial annoyance that the states can ignore to pursue whatever dunderheaded policies they choose.

That’s how I would want to face the Triple Alliance, Third Reich, and Soviet Union.
