As long as those who practice and regulate the practice of Islam are convinced that it is the literal and unchanging word of Allah, they will not be able to change or adapt to fit the modern age.

It took Christianity until the Englightenment to understand that the Holy Scriptures are the work of humans - they might well be diviniely inspired, but they are the product of their times and of their social and political situation.

Most of the Islamic world has failed to make this leap, and there are few signs that it going to change any time soon.
