Just watched that sheriff walk that back all the way to I dunno how many, if any, based his earlier on 911 calls.
Initial reports of casualties are often wildly inaccurate; you have to wait a couple days to get a reliable count.
As others here have mentioned, evacuations are complicated. Often, itβs unclear where the hurricanes will hit until very late, not giving people sufficient time to leave affected areas. Doing it in advance, you end up with a much wider area of evacuation, leading to roads with gridlock and cars stuck for hours trying to flee, and perhaps heading to more dangerous sites.
