Senator McConnell grew up in the middle of Jim Crow. I suspect he has not grown out of it.

My mother (slightly older than McConnell) was appalled when my father was stationed in Maryland and I was forced into a segregated (white) school. She demanded (and got) to return to Michigan with her children so we would not be indoctrinated in the way Senator McConnell was.
