Eh, seeking a sense of continuity with the better parts of the past is a pretty common thing. Pre-Columbian Mesoamericans did it all the time: the new group comes into power, and suddenly they turn out to have a lineage back to Teotihuacan and the Toltecs (who they mistake thought as the makers of that city). This could be especially glaring, like in the case of the Mexica…people who were explicitly from a far away place.
