re: #219 Ace Rothstein
Craig was the one truest to Flemingâs portrayal in the books. Violent and dark.
Fleming filled in the backstory about James Bond in later books after the first Bond film, âDoctor Noâ was made, making him a half-Scottish half-Swiss brutal thug with a veneer of sophistication. This was a direct response to Conneryâs portrayal of Bond.
There were other âsecret agentâ TV shows like âThe Saintâ and âMan in a Suitcaseâ around in the 1960s, some of them glamorous and some of them gritty but Connery was able to bring to Bond both elements of the role unlike most of his successors. Fortunately for him he was never called on to make a Bond movie anything like âThe Prisonerâ which dialled the secret agent schtick up to eleven.
