I’m sure it is a Midwest thing. There are a lot of what you’d call “rustic” recipes around here, like the vinegar pie. Very meat and potatoes folk, us of the heartland.
There is also a bit of a divide between rhubarb and mince meat pie when it comes to the “heartland” varieties. Seems that people I know swear by one or the other, but never both - if they like one, they almost invariably detest the other.
