There was a very interesting “The Foods That Made America” episode about American beer. Everything you all like to complain about with these beers was a solution to the problem that plagued a lot of food and led to numerous advances: how do you ship beer hundreds of miles, before reliable refrigeration, without it going bad.

The regulatory/legal side of that is what gave Hal Needham the plot for Smokey and the Bandit, since Coors, at that time, was still not pasteurized and had no preservatives and was limited by law to being allowed to be sold in parts of the western US.
