Even on the extremes of the parties, more people vote strategically these days than was previously the case. And if someone has a background that is easy to mine for stuff that can be used to damaging effect, strategic voters will not vote for that person.

Agreed, but how do you reconcile that with Romney’s skillet full of flip flops?
