I once asked a friend who was MACV-SOG, how he felt about the complaints re AR15 - M16 problems in the field.

His response, “we didn’t give a shit. We just used what was at hand.”

He may have been helicoptered in & out by a guy who used to work on my car… I had a mechanic down in Arlington (TX) years ago who flew Kingbee H-34s. Guy had a MACV-SOG commendation letter on the wall next to a map of Vietnam on which the capital was not “Ho Chi Minh City”. Imagine an unassuming little 5’4” Vietnamese guy with greasy hands who had stories of pulling special forces off of burning hilltops under fire…

H-34s, M1 Carbines, and guts is all they needed.
