I’m reminded of something an Israeli colonel is reported to have said to a soldier who had cited the enemy’s atrocities as an excuse for misconduct by Israeli soldiers: “If a dog bites you, I would expect you as a man not to bite him back. You might shoot him, but if you get down on your knees and bite him, you have become a dog too.”
