I agree there is definitely a difference in perception between men’s and women’s behavior, but I think it can also be more nuanced than people think, because part of the difference is that women (in general) notice more when men react negatively to them. I have known many men in the work environment who piss people off with their attitude, but they simply don’t notice (or pretend not to), and it doesn’t necessarily make them bad at their jobs. That goes back to my comment about women saying things like “he really didn’t like it when I said X”, and my response being “who cares - if you need to say X then you say X.”

It also probably depends a lot on the industry and function - in higher ed there are a lot of female administrators so there’s probably more room for different forms of self-expression.
