Yes as in we are all the same tribe.

In fact, it is even literal as the word Jew derives from the tribe of Judah.

It became humorous to ask someone that you were not sure if they were Jewish if they were a tribe member. That way there was less chance of causing offense if the intent of the question was mistaken or if the person wasn’t.

And if a person doesn’t get, “are you a member of the Tribe?” then you can be pretty sure that they aren’t.
