I see it a little differently. I think he realized he could exploit his physical resemblance to some Indians and achieve a level of academic success that would be impossible based on his meager abilities and accomplishments. I see him as a calculated fraud from the get-go.

I actually think he has made himself more than half-believe it; and has been hugging himself inside for years at how he’s “putting one over.”

He’s interesting on a character level. Just imagine trying to make his character plausible in a story.
