I’ve thought at times that the elected ones as a group at the moment aren’t exactly smart, aren’t exactly sane, but I’ve seen no lack of backbone among them…

They are. They’re bullies and they find themselves walking back their tough talk all the time. The best they can manage is passive-aggressive behavior—accuse the President of not working with them to get more concessions, and then whine about how they’re not being listened to after they get them. Petulant little children is what they are.
