Mark Twain said he was one of the best writers of prose in the 19th century

Of course, Twain’s failing company was Grant’s publisher, but yeah it’s supposed to be excellent work. He even gave Grant something like 75% — a huge deal for a writer. It’s sad that he died only days after he finished writing them, and in poverty. Fortunately, the memoirs made his family quite a penny.
