However, I’m in the middle of watching Rear Window and it’s obvious that Hitchcock wanted to give the censors the middle finger again.

Not Wayne himself. But they were always doing the cross dressing thing even back in the silent film days. Wasn’t that big a deal since it was still the theater for the most part.
