Thing is, the longer this drags on without response, the more emboldened they become. The law’s being at the very least bent, if not outright broken, and the local officials seem to be either cowed by the open displays and threats or are in fact supportive of these loons.

I’d sooner say they are afraid of the public backlash that might - and I emphasize the “might” - follow from attempting action on these yokels. They know it’s going to be bad; people are going to get shot, some of them will probably die. While comparisons to Waco and Ruby Ridge might be completely unfounded, they will be made, and it will be an ugly PR stain that will probably never go away. If I had to guess, they’re probably plotting strategies to make this go away quietly, and none of them involve being hasty.
