I’ve never been able to reply to anyone in Spy mode on my phone. Maybe I just don’t know how to do it.

To get into Spy mode for a comment thread, click the magnifying glass icon either from the front page, or from an article page. When you do this you’ll see only the comments for that thread, and there will be a comment posting form at the top of the page. I use Spy mode all the time on my iPhone to post and read comments.
