5th Armored was more than just tanks. They had a number of artillery batallions, whether the 47th, 71st, or 95th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He could have been attached to one of those units.

Those three units were organized 1944-1945. There were a couple others from earlier in the war. If you know the time period in which he served, you can probably narrow it down.

From there, you could probably even contact the unit historians and they might have other information for you.
