To call it a distraction is to say it doesn’t matter. The problem is, for a wide swath of Americans who just happen to not be white, it very much matters. And it’s the kind of thing that gets dismissed by those who pretend they know better as ‘identity politics’ when those who are affected by this kind of overt racism soaking into every aspect of American discourse complain.

But don’t you dare call conservatives who are pro-forced birth, anti-abortion, pro-guns for everyone, anti-women’s rights supporters of “identity politics”—they’ll be indignantly insulted.

All politics is identity politics.
