and since they *had* to know that this could be done quickly, at least to determine whether anything new existed, why not obtain the warrant and do the search before sending any letter?

which doesnt even address the timing. they had the laptop for weeks. they could have done this basic sifting in no time. but they waited until a week before 11/8
