Yes Great Grandpa and Grandpa were Socialists during that time. What is interesting is that up thru the start of World War 1 there was an actual Socialist Party that elected a significant chunk of local officeholders. Wilson and his AG Palmer went after them when was declared. After the war and the Russian Revolution, Palmer had his famous raids carried out by his deputy J Edgar Transvestite which effectively destroyed the Socialist Party.

In the NC-09 discussion, while we’re talking about Congress simply refusing to seat what’s-his-name, let’s remember there’s precedent—the ten Socialist congressmen that Congress refused to seat in 1916. Some of them were reelected, and I think two were elected again in 1920, so their Districts had no representation for six years.
