What incentive does Iran have to hit back anywhere but here on US shores?

Nothing.

Iran will fight asymmetrically. They don’t have to hit us domestically. They can hit a HVT anywhere in the world.

Imagine if they fired salvos of missiles at one of our carrier task forces, hitting one of the carriers. That’s a direct military on military engagement, and Iran would end up worse for it.

But they could carry out sabotage/terror attacks against diplomatic facilities, assassinate key American diplomats. Force shuttering of diplomatic facilities because of security risks. Start war in Lebanon and drag Syria and Israel into it. Chaos. Trump doesn’t have a plan for any of it. But that’s how asymmetrical warfare works. We can fight and beat those engaging in a straight up military engagement, but everyone also knows that - so they’ll fight in different ways. Heck, mining the Strait of Hormuz would be effective and costly - driving up oil prices (something the Saudis, Russians, and others would benefit from, though it would likely cause a recession).

None of this would get communicated to Trump because he doesn’t listen to those who tell him what he needs to hear.
