I’m fine with satire = offensive. But art doesn’t need to be. It CAN be offensive. It can be groundbreaking…but it can just be beautiful, too.

I agree with both things. I think you’ll find that the more you consider some things ‘profane’ or unfit for depiction or representation, the less and less transgression you’ll get in art, and the more and more art will tend to freeze.

If you look at it in the inverse way— imagine how awesome the paintings from the Renaissance would be if the constraints on what to paint weren’t so limited. Donatello’s version of Christ— actually making him look like he was suffering— was an amazing step forward in art, but what would it would have looked like if Donatello hadn’t had to break that taboo, if it already had been broken?
