There are two valid reasons manhole covers are round.

The engineering answer is that a round lid will not fall through a slightly smaller round hole no matter how you try to orient it.

The smart (social scientist’s) reason is that manholes are round.

i got extra credit for the additional answer that it is much easier for one person to roll a round manhole cover to the truck than it would be to carry one that can’t roll. i’d seen city workers rolling them
